Our Pacific Street Bear’s garden turned 30 this month.
As the Bear’s garden embarks on our seed saving project as a counterbalance to big agribusiness and their insistence on ‘owning’ seeds and outlawing seed saving, community gardens want to put in our two cents.

We started the process of certifying our five BANG gardens as wildlife habitats through the National Wildlife Federation this past summer.
Yes, bees count as wildlife!
In mid-October, the Bears started their seed saving project.
Our focus is to harvest and save the seeds of crops that we deem worthy of future propigation.
Fall is a good time to collect and keep those seeds that you want to grow next season.
This year the Bear’s garden will embark on our first official seed saving project.
Let’s just say that NYC’s August’s Dog Days are not always due to the heat…
